MRS. BEETON, MY SISTER

Mrs. Beeton, My Sister

Written and performed by Alison Neil

Directed by David Collison

Award-winning playwright Alison Neil’s play “BELLA – THE STORY OF MRS BEETON” was hugely popular, and ran from 1988-2002. It was adapted for BBC Radio 4 as a Saturday Afternoon Play.

MRS BEETON, MY SISTER is an all-new retelling of this entertaining and moving story, using the latest research…..

Many years after Isabella Beeton’s untimely death, Bessie Mayson muses on the extraordinary life of her famous big sister.  They were the eldest of 21 children, brought up in the Grand Stand at Epsom Race Course.  Quiet, obedient Isabella fell for a charming publisher called Sam Beeton, and joined his rackety life in journalism, culminating in her world-famous “Beeton’s Book of Household Management”. Her family disapproved. But were they right?  Thirty years on, Bessie is not so sure…

"It was an absolute pleasure, yet again, to attend one of your fabulous performances".

    ORGANISER OF "JAUNTS" GROUP 2019

"Alison Neil is an actress of such consummate skill that an evening in her company is not to be missed.  So engaged was I in Alison's performance that it was something of a shock when the lights went up and one found oneself returned to the twenty-first century. After the interval, we settled down for a question-and-answer session with Alison Neil.  This proved rivetting."  YARCOMBE VOICES

"Excellent - both the performance and the audience reaction!! Alison Neil is a top performer whose presentation informed, entertained and often moved a very appreciative audience ".

    CARMATHEN ARTS

    "A perfect Sunday afternoon!

Alison Neil's performance was lively, humorous and engaging. She conveyed not only the trials and tribulations of 19th Century England but also a good sense of Isabella Beeton's character and her large colourful family . . . not to be missed !"

    PEWSEY HERITAGE CENTRE - review

"The compliments have been flowing thick and fast - we are basking in your reflected glory.  The question, without exception, asked is, "when is she coming back?" "

    USK CASTLE FRIENDS

"Very many thanks for a superb evening with Mrs Beeton's sister. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed it. We would love to see you again in the future."

    ORGANISER, AMPTHILL PRESERVATION SOCIETY

"Just to say how much we all enjoyed your recent performance to our W.I. group meeting. The feedback has all been very positive, your performance was really captivating, and your professionalism made it a very easy evening for those of us who organised it. I would have no hesitation in recommending you to other groups and wish you every success".

"...a wonderfully entertaining and informative evening which everyone enjoyed enormously.

"Apart from the actual performance, I was impressed by your organisation and meticulous attention to detail... the advertising material, a lovely programme, and the set was most

    effective. "

ORGANISER, ST PAUL'S CHURCH HOUSE, SKETTY

"You have a captive audience here wanting more!   We all enjoyed your show very much. I sat there watching very jealously wishing that I had some of your expertise! Of course, without the years of training, the dedication and experience that you have, such thoughts should not enter my mind!

    ORGANISER, BACKWELL PLAYHOUSE

"Thank you again for a wonderful evening.  You could have been left in no doubt how much the audience enjoyed it.  The comments were full of praise for the performance, coupled with a unanimous desire for more from you in the future.  It goes to show how strong the thirst to see professional, live performances in villages is."

    ORGANISER, YARCOMBE JUBILEE HALL, DEVON

"I know the whole audience thoroughly enjoyed the show - some were a little surprised at how much, I think, as they were not sure quite what to expect.  Some of the local men told me this week that they hadn't attended because they thought it would be about cooking - they now wished they had come and I don't think they will make that mistake in the future!"

    PROMOTER, CHELMARSH PARISH HALL

"As ever, yours was a simply bravura performance that kept your audience spellbound.  I only wish that you could have heard the accolades as people left - together with their entreaties that you be asked to come again."

    USK CASTLE FRIENDS

    "It was brilliant."
